Moving to the Sunshine Coast

Hi there,
My husband and I are considering relocating from the Lower Mainland to the Sunshine Coast. We also have a young daughter. We've visited many, many times and love it. Would like to hear some perspectives of people who have done the same. We're hoping to get away from big city, impersonal living and into a more community-based way of life. But a few people from Vancouver have mentioned to us that it can be difficult to be accepted by the local community. Is this true?

I have lived on the Sunshine Coast for 6 yrs. I have worked here and then retired. I was originally from North Vancouver. I have volunteered for different jobs and also tried to join various groups. I would lie to tell you that it is easy.

I find that due to an elderly community many are snow birds and otherwise away visiting family when they can. There is some concern for care for the elderly if you are in that realm.

Certain groups are definitely cliquey and hard to join. Others have shared that with me.
I enjoyed cycling but the highway is too dangerous for that.
Many do not welcome more people moving to the Coast.They tend to resist change and businesses have a hard time over the winters. If you have a circle of friends here already you will be okay but others have shared it is hard to establish new ones. If you are a reclusive type it is perfect. I like to go to shows and the symphony and keep my options open..... the coast is not the place for that.

My single friend( mid fifties) who moved here recently is moving again because she has joined every group there is but still finds she is lonely.

My frustration is more with winter where restaurants, stores and other services are limited or closed . Everything changes after May 24 th weekend. The population triples and it is full of life. that is when you cannot do better than a house on the Coast.

These are my reflections. As I look at how many times I return to the mainland I will probably look to return in the future. It very much depends on the individual and where their family and friends are situated. In your sixties it is a bit hard to begin to make new friends.

Shes very active and loves going out with her friends.

Im retired and would love to find a place that supports special needs people that are very involed with community.

I too am thinking of moving to the Sunshine Coast . I hadn't heard that locals are not very excepting of new people. But I did read the last family concerned about this? I'd be moving on my own with my two young daughters, I don't want to make the wrong move? I'd like us to settle down I to a great community that we very much want to be a part of.

Any input would be great!!!

Work is extremely hard to get on the Sunshine Coast and wages are very low. My partner is a qualified carpenter and was earning about $500 a week installing curtains (that is not a good wage). last year I couldn't get a job at all that paid more than $10/$11 an hour, so started my own business of writing and now i run my website do my essay for me and earn through online income It's a funny old place - very expensive to live, and most people either start their own business and can't afford to pay staff as well as in the cities.. or they bite the bullet and take a low paid job to get by

So many people commute, because, like you they do not want to live anywhere else.

Depending on where U live, he may be giving up bumper-bumper freeway traffic for a ferry commute, which is far more restful & often much shorter.

With grandparents & parents living on the Coast, he could give it a try while you are up visiting. Join the commuters on the 6:20 ferry either by personal car, walking on, or joining others in commuter van.

He may find he prefers it to his current commute. And his kids would be in a peaceful area where the parents walk their kids to school.

I would move to the Coast in a heartbeat and know that I would never look back! My Uncle and his wife have had a little house on the beach for the past 30+ years, they used to spend their weekends there before retiring there full time. Whenever I went there as a young child to visit I always felt like I was in this magical place, it was heavenly! Now I go there to visit my parents who retired there a few years back. My boys love going there for a visit and never want to leave. The only thing holding us back is my husband works downtown for a great company and has no intention of leaving his job and that would be quite the commute. It is so hard because it is something I think about every day and a place where I would love to raise our two amazing boys!

My husband & I relocated in 2002 and never looked back. Moving into a new community can be difficult whatever the size. Getting involved is the best way to meet people & make new friends.

Children should make the adjustment easily, and parents will meet other parents thru their children.

Commuting is sometimes a pain, especially on long weekends or thru the summer; however we only have traffic back ups when the ferry docks. A real plus as it is easy to get around & find parking often right in front of the store or doctors office.

Great hospital, with brand new addition. Many of the services you have on the Lower Mainland are on the Coast so once settled, it is often the case that the commuting becomes less & less.

A great place to live!!

Hello! I moved here 19 years ago when my son was just 6 months, and it is such a great place to raise a family. My children are in their late teens now and if I ask them if they would have preferred the city, they think I'm crazy, there's so much for kids to do here. In terms of breaking into the community, all you have to do is get involved in something. Getting started is so much easier when you have a young child too- you have a natural in. Such a huge group of young families everywhere that you can't help but make friends and acquaintences. Good Luck-you could be here by this summer!

You will do just fine. We were transplants 20 yrs ago and had no trouble finding something to do in the community. Our kids hated to move here (first yr. of high school)... now they'd hate to leave.

Trying to live on the coast has its ups and downs. Seasonal rainfall is abundant. Forest dwelling hillbillies drive around at night on old logging roads looking for abonded cars. Lighting them on fire. I'm sure you've witnessed some of these burnt leftovers in the bush.

So bring your family. We'd love to have you for a barbecue.

Hi, Tracey here (Admin). Thanks for the question about moving to the Sunshine Coast.

It is an amazing life style change from living in Vancouver or the suburbs. You wouldn't regret it.

As for fitting in as a local, as with any smaller community, this takes time. Perhaps 20 years ago it was a little more difficult to fit in here on the coast if you were new, however in the last 10 years there has been a surge of new residents, and it is very easy to blend into the communities.

If you get involved in groups, events, and activities, your circle of friends will grow even quicker.

So, while the urban legend of shunning new comers still exists, it is not really the case. I know you would feel welcome by the local residents.
